Venus Williams has made her way in the quarter final round of the Bank of the West Classic tennis tournament. She defeated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the Round of 16 yesterday. She won that match in the straight sets by 6-4, 7-6 (1).
Venus’ opponent in the quarter finals will be the German player Andrea Petkovic who has been given the 8th seed in this tournament.
If the American veteran gets better of Petkovic and makes it to the Round of 4, she might get to face her younger sister Serena there.
In the post match interview, Venus said that she’s hoping for that to happen. In her words, “I hope the two Williams are up against each other tomorrow.”
For Azarenka, however, it was not an occasion of happiness at all. She is going to drift down in the world rankings because of this defeat. She would not be a top 10 player anymore when the next WTA rankings get released.
The Belarusian didn’t let Venus have her way easy though. She fought hard at the end dragging the second set quite long, but, Williams, who was also the local girl, sealed the contest at the end with some sparkling shots in the tie breaker.
In the tie breaker, Venus got two early mini breaks with forehand winners and thereafter, she didn’t let things go out of her control.
Meanwhile, Venus’ sister, Serena, is going to take on Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the Round of 8. Out of the two times that these two players have played against each other this season, they have won once each.
Ivanovic had knocked Serena out of the Australian Open earlier in the season, while, Serena did the same to the Serbian in Internazionali BNL d’Italia in May.
