Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had suffered a knee injury towards the end of the last season, but, now, he has completely recovered from that and he is hoping that he manages to win his first Grand Slam singles title next year.
Tsonga has been around in the professional circuit since quite some time and he has lifted some trophies, but, he hasn’t achieved glory in the Grand Slams so far.
The second half of the last season was not that good for Tsonga. He couldn’t perform that well in the Wimbledon championships and then because of his injury, he had to withdraw his name from the last Grand Slam of the year i.e. the US Open. His world ranking got affected by that. He moved down to no. 10. He would have been quite disappointed with that as he was looking good halfway through the season and was expected to finish the season with a much better world ranking. But, it seems that he has put that disappointment behind him and is ready to go into the 2013 season completely fresh.
The first tournament for Tsonga in the new season will be the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in a couple of days’ time. He reached Abu Dhabi yesterday to take part in that tournament.
Talking to the reporters, the Frenchman said, “I am going into the new season with a brand new staff and I hope that I manage to make a good start to the season. The target for me is to win my first Grand Slam and I know I am capable of doing that.”
Tsonga has not played tennis at top level since the last 4 months and in Abu Dhabi, he will be up against one of the top players straightaway i.e. Andy Murray.
